Is It Legal to Buy a Suppressor?

Yes—suppressor ownership is legal under U.S. federal law and permitted in most states. Suppressors are regulated under the National Firearms Act (NFA), which means buyers must meet specific eligibility requirements and complete an approval process before taking possession.

Basic Requirements to Buy a Suppressor

  • -Must be 21 years old in order to buy a suppressor product (18 years old to possess a suppressor as a trust beneficiary or to buy from an individual)
  • -Must be a U.S. citizen or legal permanent resident
  • -Must live in one of the 42 states where suppressor ownership is legal
  • -Must be legally allowed to possess a firearm under federal law

For in person suppressor purchases: Find a dealer or service that has their SOT and can facilitate your purchase through an ATF form submission and bring your ID along with payment method. Make sure the group selected has your desired suppressor in stock OR if you can have your suppressor transferred to desired local dealer (transfer fees vary by dealer)

Step 3: Apply for a Federal Tax Stamp

Although the tax stamp no longer carries a fee, it remains a required part of the NFA approval process. This step formally registers the suppressor and links it to the approved purchaser.

  • -Complete & Submit the Physical ATF Form 4 Or Digital eForm 4 to the ATF through your selected purchasing group (in-person or online)

Whatever the case, the Form 4 document submission will require submitting:

  • – Personal information such as your name, social security number, and address
  • – Fingerprints via a paper card form (FD-258)
  • – Passport-style photograph

Step 4: Complete and Submit ATF Form 4

For many, the most challenging step-waiting…Form 4 approval wait times vary according to ATF workload, paper submission or digital eForm filling, and how the form is filed (individual or trust).

  • – Prior to 2026, wait times varied from days to years, but since then the ATF has drastically improved processing speed through electronic filing (why our recommendation is to file your form 4 digitally via eForm 4).

Step 7: Take Possession Of Your Suppressor

Once approved, your selected dealer or service receives a notification of your form 4 approval which will require you to complete a standard 4473 form (as you would for any firearm purchase) in order to release your suppressor.

  • – For in-person suppressor purchases: Once your local dealer or service contacts you around ATF approval, you will need to show your ID in order to pick up your suppressor and get your approved Form 4.
  • – For online suppressor purchases: Possession options vary according to the dealer, service, or manufacturer you are purchasing the suppressor through, however, most orders done this way are shipped to a local dealer of your choosing or directly to your door.
    • * Both pickup at your local dealer and taking possession at your doorstep will require showing a valid ID
    • *Regardless of how you take possession of your suppressor it is important to retain and keep your approved Form 4 in safe keeping as its your proof of legal ownership
